Abstract

|
Two cases of variceal bleeding caused by splenic vein thrombosis that we have experienced, are presented and reviewed.
They were 59-yr male and 27-yr female. In both cases, liver was normal and portal vein was patent, but splenic vein was obstructed. The cause of splenic vein thrombosis was pancreatitis in the former case, and unknown in the latter.
Splenectomy was performed in both cases. In the former case, total gastrectomy was performed due to massive G-I bleeding 16 months after splenectomy. Biopsy revealed focal mucosal erosion of the stomach.
